[Category 2] Leptospermum 1

This is a Leptospermum collected locally on August 4, 2009.

I’ve potted it up into a training pot grow more fine roots and develop the branch structure before eventually transferring it to a suitable pot for display.

I don’t know if this one will become a “roots above ground” or if I might train the branches to suit a “windswept” style in harmony with its trunkline.

I’ve been building roots and vigour in the plant, and encouraging ramification using tip pruning and clip’n grow methods.

This plant hs been trained since reshooting after collection and is growing in south eastern NSW.

Jan i certainly like its stance in the middle pic and see a potential semi cascade that could be very nice in time.

This is a Leptospermum obovatum.

Hi a great fine indeed i have one as well during the growth season i have been placing it in a tray of water, does this work for you i would like to know during the next growth period

In our very dry, hot summers I keep mine on a bed of damp sand and have a venitian cord wick in the bottom to allow the soil to wick up moisture if the day is very drying. They seem to like the humid atmosphere created by the damp sand bed.

I'm at altitude, and we are subject to very hot, drying winds at times in summer (hydrometre often doesn't even register "0") so I have to work on keeping things from drying out. My system might not work for those in a moister climate.

This little leptospermum is coming along nicely, puting on new top growth and hopefully, roots to match.

It has recently had a haircut to encourage ramification. I plan to keep the roots exposed to add to the rugged feel of the trunk and to train it as a semi cascade.

It will be root pruned in Spring to encourage a compact set of roots and it's top will continue to be trained by clip 'n grow method. This one may be able to go into a display pot in a year or so depending on how it responds next spring/summer.
