[Category 2] Leptospermum 2

Postby Jan » March 1st, 2010, 12:32 pm

This Leptospermnum was collected locally on August 4, 2009.

I originally potted it into a tray because of its extensive roots. I’ve pruned it since and potted it up into a training pot grow more fine roots and develop the branch structure before eventually transferring it to a suitable pot for display.

An eventual styling choice will depend on how it responds to the clip ‘n grow/tip pruning to develop branch ramification.

P.S. "Leptospermum obovatum" is the only one listed for our Shire so that is what it must be.

This plant is responding well to regular watering and feeding. I presume that the root development is proceeding at the same rate as the top.

I plan to root prune this Leptospermum in spring to set up a good compact root system and to trim the top to encourage further ramification. I am very happy with the exposed roots which I plan to use as a feature and, depending on where the plant shoots in the spring, I may carve the heavier upward pointing branch and burn it to match in with the character in the lower trunk.

It will be a few more years of development with this one before it is ready to move to a display pot.
